Collagen is a protein that comprises three-quarters of the skin and is responsible for maintaining skin elasticity.
With age, the collagen density in our skin decreases and the rate of collagen synthesis is reduced. This results in loss of skin structure and reduced dermal thickness, manifesting as wrinkled and aged skin. Thus, in efforts to combat the signs of ageing, various methods of exogenous collagen supplementation have grown in popularity.
Sculptra (PLLA-collagen stimulator) is an injectable that improves the quality, volume and thickness of the skin by stimulating collagen production. However, it is different from hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers as it stimulates the fibroblasts to produce new collagen fibres, whereas HA fillers physically occupy the space under the tissue to smooth out wrinkles. Sculptra delivers gradual and natural results unlike HA fillers, which just adds volume for immediate results. Moreover, Sculptra results last up to 2 years, while, HA fillers last up to a year.
Sculptra addresses multiple signs of ageing and is indicated for people who:
- need to treat skin laxity or
- address fat loss
Sculptra is not recommended to be used on diseased or damaged tissue and is not meant for the use of those who:
- have acne, cysts, or are infected with rashes and any other type of skin infection
- suffer from severe allergies
- have a history of really bad scarring,
- consistently experience skin inflammation
Sculptra is injected into the deep dermis or the subcutaneous layer of the skin. At first, the injected volume immediately (temporarily) fills out wrinkles or corrects volume defects. Within a few days of injection, water and other constituents are absorbed by the body while the Sculptra particles remain in place, causing wrinkles or volume defects to appear uncorrected again.
Soon enough, through Sculptra particles, macrophages are recruited and fused to giant cells, in turn recruiting fibroblasts, which begin depositing collagen and providing a structure to the skin. Over time, Sculptra particles degrade, however, the collagen deposits thus formed remain intact to provide results that can last for up to 2 years.
Sculptra is a non-surgical injectable that diminishes facial wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds, aka ‘smile lines’ between the nose and mouth which are caused by ageing. Sculptra also treats fine lines and wrinkles around the chin. In addition, it can be used for:
- buttock augmentation or nonsurgical butt lift
- correction of chest, elbow, and knee wrinkles
- correction of cellulite
Sculptra has become a popular choice for those looking to bulk up their appearance as well! It helps create definition and the toned look of extra muscle mass across:
- biceps
- triceps
- pectorals
- thighs
- glutes
When placed in some of the most popular muscle groups, Sculptra can prove to be an effective way of transforming the body into a better form, even giving that chiselled “V” shaped chest. However, Sculptra is not recommended for use on eyelids, nose, and red of the lips.
On the first visit of the Sculptra treatment, the doctor will map out the injection sites on the skin and cleanse the area to be treated. A topical anaesthetic may be applied to help with any discomfort. He/she will use multiple small injections to ensure even distribution of Sculptra. One can return to normal activities immediately after this treatment.
To achieve the final desired look, regular visits to the clinic—usually three at four-six-month intervals is recommended to produce dramatic anti-ageing results.
For at least five or seven days before the appointment, the following pre-care instructions should be adhered:
- Avoid blood-thinning supplements, such as Vitamin E and Ginkgo
- Do not use Retinol or acid products
- Drink plenty of water
- Do not use Aspirin or NSAIDs
- Do not drink alcohol
- Avoid exfoliating the skin
- Reschedule appointment in case of a current cold sore breakout
It is recommended to:
- Apply an ice pack (wrapped in a clean cloth) to the treated area every once in a while, after treatment to minimize any swelling and/or bruising. Direct contact of ice with the skin must be avoided
- Circularly massage the treated area for 5 minutes, 5 times a day for 5 days after each treatment. This helps to evenly disperse substance and promote natural-looking correction
- Avoid excessive sun exposure and tanning until any swelling and redness has disappeared
- Avoid all unnecessary physical activities for the first 24 hours after the treatment
Are you the right candidate for Sculptra?
You are the right candidate for Sculptra if:
- You want to restore volume and firmness to hollow areas of your face that have developed due to ageing or weight loss
- You’d like a filler that gives your face a natural look and feel with lasting results
- You are over 45 years old
However, it’s always best to seek recommendations from dermatologists and aestheticians before deciding whether you should go ahead with this treatment.
Are there any risks or side effects?
The most common side effects encountered after the treatment are swelling and bruising at the injection site. Other possible side effects include:
- itching
- redness
- bumps
- tenderness
- bleeding
In some cases, lumps and skin discolouration occurs. This is frequently related to the depth of the injection, reinforcing the importance of finding a qualified professional.
How long does it take to see the results?
Sculptra needs several weeks to take effect. Generally speaking, the results are visible after about four to six weeks of treatment. This is because the stimulation of fibroblast and the production of collagen takes time.
What’s the difference between Sculptra and dermal fillers?
One of the major perks of choosing Sculptra is that the treatment lasts a lot longer than the other dermal fillers on the market. Compared to other popular wrinkle-reducing fillers, Sculptra is a permanent filler, meaning it works to build volume in the face while at the same time reducing wrinkles.
Who should not undergo Sculptra?
Those suffering from the following conditions are advised not to undergo Sculptra:
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- History of hypersensitivity to any Sculptra constituents
- History of hypersensitivity to lidocaine or other amide-type local anaesthetics (Sculptra without the addition of lidocaine can be used)
- Severe allergies manifested by a history of anaphylaxis or history or presence of multiple severe allergies
- Active disease, such as inflammation (skin eruption such as cysts, pimples, rashes or hives), infection or tumours, in or near the intended treatment site
- Any skin issues such as outbreaks, rashes or redness, keloids or hypertrophic scarring
- Individuals with autoimmune problems like multiple sclerosis (MS), lupus, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and vasculitis.
Does Sculptra look natural?
Sculptra depends on your body’s natural ability to provide more collagen by actually stimulating your body to produce more of it. It may not happen overnight, but you’ll see and feel a difference in your skin as time passes—and you won’t need any painful or invasive procedures along the way.
Does Sculptra lift the face?
Sculptra is a natural material, the first of its kind to be approved by the FDA to lift and refine facial contours. This cosmetic ingredient helps restore volume lost in specific areas of your face where collagen, fat, and soft tissue have been depleted over time. And since Sculptra is naturally derived, it can be used in conjunction with other injectable procedures rather than being an alternative to them.
Is Sculptra better than Botox?
These two solutions work in different ways. Botox is a mixture of botulinum toxins, which acts as a paralytic on the facial muscles and leads to fewer wrinkles over time. Sculptra, on the other hand, uses poly-L-lactic acid to stimulate collagen growth within the dermis layers of the skin for a more youthful appearance that lasts longer than Botox.
Results of Botox are seen in as quick as days, typically getting even better over weeks and months after treatment. Positive outcomes with Sculptra often aren’t seen within a month or two, as it takes some time to start promoting collagen production and plumping fine lines and wrinkles from the inside out.
How often should you get Sculptra?
Although Sculptra is designed to last for up to two years at a time, it’s important to have annual top-up treatments to maintain results. An expert can advise the right frequency of treatments depending on your skin and the way you like to look.
If you are looking for natural and long-lasting results—and want a treatment that addresses multiple signs of ageing—Sculptra could be the right choice for you. Speak to your dermatologist who will advise you on a safe and suitable procedure.
