Nd Yag

While lasers have grown to be the universal go-to technology for hair reduction, it is not unusual to come across instances of painful sessions, skin burns or disappointing results. Technique matters, without doubt. However, it is just as important to start by selecting the optimal laser technology for every individual.

At the heart of the Laser Luxe experience is the expertise of our dermatologist-therapist teams. They work closely with every customer to deliver a customized treatment crafted around the individual’s hair and skin type, using the latest technologies, systems and devices. So, although all Laser Luxe are based on three major laser platforms – Alexandrite, Diode and Nd: Yag – no two treatments are quite the same.

Now why do we have three different laser platforms? To provide the most effective and comfortable experience for every skin and hair type. Each of the different types of laser has a specific range of utility, depending on its wavelength and penetration.

For instance, the diode laser performs works well on coarse, dark hair and is a good choice for back or bikini hair. It operates at a wavelength that allows deeper penetration into the skin, avoiding the melanin in the epidermis and therefore targeting the hair follicle directly.

The Alexandrite laser has a shorter wavelength than the Diode and Nd: Yag lasers, and has been used effectively for laser hair removal treatment on skin types I-IV, meaning fair and light brown skin types. The shorter wavelength makes the treatment more effective on lighter skins and not suitable for darker skins.

The Nd: Yag long pulse laser can be used safely on all skin types – type I to VI. Most notably, it is highly effective on dark or tanned skin with darker hair, but is of limited use on light or fine hair. Fast repetition rates and large coverage areas allow large areas of the body to be treated quickly. Nd: YAG technology can be used to eliminate unwanted hair on almost any part of the body.

While the technology is offered by several device makers, at Kaya we have opted for the Gentle YAG Pro from Syneron Candela for its effectiveness and its ability to deliver an unmatched laser experience in every way. It’s painless, faster, safe and effective!

How Gentle:YAG Pro Laser works

First, a quick review of how laser hair reduction works. The root of every shaft of hair sits in a tiny sac called the hair follicle. Laser hair removal damages this hair follicle, eliminating hair growth.

The laser emits a beam of light which travels through the skin to the hair follicle below. The hair follicle absorbs this light energy which gets transformed into heat, destroying both, hair shaft and follicle.

Delivered with a small handheld piece, Gentle YAG Pro delivers an intense beam of laser light that can heat up the melanin in the hair and destroy the hair follicle in the targeted spot while keeping the skin tissues in the surrounding area unharmed. Painless operation is a key goal. The Dynamic Cooling Device DCD, patented by Candela, cools the upper layers of skin with a burst of cryogen milliseconds before and after the laser pulse. This pulse which heats up the epidermal layer of skin could potentially damage it, but the DCD spray delivers an equal and opposite cooling effect to keep skin safe and unhurt without compromising the efficacy of the laser.

Gentle YAG Pro has established beyond doubt its effectiveness with both, dark and light skin types.

Gentle YAG Pro uses the latest and biggest spot size for laser hair reduction available today. This makes for much faster treatments and satisfied clients because it’s a “clean” and neat procedure which does not use gels while lasing the skin.

What you can look forward to

The treatment experience is relatively painless. Hair growth in the treatment area reduces with each session of the treatment. (Do take a look at our section on hair growth cycles to understand why total removal of hair is still followed by some regrowth) Your dermatologist-therapist team will chart out your schedule based on the size of the area to be treated, skin tone, your hair colour and hair type.

Pre-treatment care

  • Avoid tanning/sunbathing/direct sun exposure for a minimum of 2 weeks before the treatment.
  • If recommended by the dermatologist or technician, apply anesthetic cream over the areas to be treated, at least one hour before your visit to the clinic. This ensures optimal numbing.

Post-treatment care

  • Avoid other hair removal methods aside from shaving and epilation creams in between sessions.
  • Do not bleach, wax, thread or pluck hair throughout the course of the treatment.
  • Do not apply henna to treated areas 7-10 days prior to and after the treatment.
  • Avoid sunbathing/direct sun exposure for a minimum of 2 weeks after the treatment.
  • Apply sunscreen on a regular basis 20 minutes before stepping out and repeat 2 to 3 times in the course of the day.
