Dermapen

Radiant skin has an underlying padding of collagen which keeps it looking plumped, firm and smooth. It is generally known that collagen depletion causes wrinkles, lines and folds marking the passage of time. What isn’t as well known, however, is the role collagen depletion plays in the formation of acne scars.
Acne scars are of two types, the more common one being Atrophic scars, which occur as collagen is lost at the site of an acne ‘injury’ and result in a depression stays visible over the long term.

The solution lies in restoring collagen precisely at the site of the damage. This becomes the essential core of a skin resurfacing plan.  Collagen can be induced to regenerate by deploying the process of micro-needling. Skin needling or micro-needling also creates a channel for nutrients applied to the skin to be better absorbed by the epidermis.

Dermapen micro-needling is a well regarded treatment for skin rejuvenation. Its pinpoint precision allows for an extraordinary degree of control in the hands of an expert dermatologist. This is a mechanical device which uses surgical steel micro-needles, fixed to a pen-like structure. A nifty little device, it can be conveniently used to treat specific skin areas, both large areas as well as small.
The depth to which the needles penetrate, can be manipulated electronically, and they can be adjusted for a range of outcomes – from enhancing nutrient absorption on the superficial layer to penetrating deep down to treat scars and wrinkles.

How Dermapen works

A topical numbing cream is applied prior to the procedure to reduce discomfort.  A treatment-appropriate serum is then applied on the area where the procedure is to be carried out and the Dermapen glides smoothly over it.

Dermapen’s skin needling technology pierces the skin vertically with multiple needles, in rapid succession, about 1000 times per second. Blood vessels below the surface of the skin break and the blood clots. The skin cells rush to heal this microscopic trauma, and the ideal environment for collagen and elastin production is created.
The Dermapen is moved across the face, creating fine channels in the skin. These channels increase the absorption and efficiency of nutrients when applied topically, stimulating repair and regeneration.

Intervention at different depths of skin, yield different results. That’s why the Dermapen has disposable needles with adjustable depths, to target a greater variety of outcomes.  Deeper levels get straight down to dealing with acne scars. Mid-penetration is required for treating sun damage, light scarring and pore size. Light, superficial micro-needling helps with therapeutic product penetration.

What to look forward to

The entire micro-needling process with a Dermapen takes place at a microscopic level and there is minimal discomfort. There may be some redness, depending on the depth to which the needles have penetrated.

Positive changes in the skin are apparent within a week of the treatment.  More importantly, the rejuvenation process which has been actively stimulated, continues for months after the procedure. Your skin renews itself every 40 days, so if your Dermapen sessions are synchronised with this cycle, skin remodelling can be quicker and more satisfying.

Post-treatment care

  • Be gentle with cleansing. Use a soothing facial wash and pat the treated areas gently dry. Avoid rubbing.
  • Hydration is key. Your skin is recovering from a micro-needling procedure and you need to avoid letting it dry out. Remember to moisturise.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure for a week after treatment, and use sunblock with SPF 30 or greater.
  • Avoid skin care products that contain retinol, alpha hydroxyl acids or Vitamin C for a week to 10 days after treatment.
