Which intimate treatment is for you?

Intimate health and wellness are an important but often overlooked area of women’s health. Essential in preventing any infections in the genital area and for healthy sexual activity, intimate wellness is particularly important when women hit menopause and during the period after childbirth. This is not to say that women not in this age group do not experience any issues; they do.

Every woman’s body is unique and so is the vulvovaginal area. It is an ecosystem in itself that has specific defence mechanisms which work in tandem to keep the genital tract healthy. This ecosystem is made up of the skin, secretions (such as discharge), acidic pH content and vaginal flora (read bacteria), that are largely maintained by the individual’s endocrine and immune systems.

However, various stressors such as pregnancy, changes in hormonal levels during menopause, chronic health conditions, hygiene practises and even sex can take a toll on vaginal health. This can then manifest as a lack of intimate enjoyment, urinary incontinence, pain in the pubic region, vaginal dryness, etc. Sometimes, owing to age and friction caused by clothing, the vaginal area also tends to darken over a period of time. For some women, this is aesthetically unappealing.

The good news is that there are many pioneering treatments that successfully treat intimate health issues. Ranging from surgical procedures to minimally invasive and completely non-invasive treatments, the above therapies have been proved quite successful to rejuvenating the vaginal area. Such treatments can also be used alter the aesthetics of the vaginal area such as vaginal tightening, vaginal brightening and hymen reconstruction, etc. In this article, we discuss four such treatments, so you can find out what’s best for you.

O – Shot: The short form of Orgasm Shot, O-Shot is an injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) that is derived from the patient’s bloodstream, which is then injected into the tissues surrounding the urethra and clitoris.

How this works: This plasma-rich O – Shot is a minimally invasive procedure that stimulates the production of new collagen in the body, and effectively helps tighten the vaginal area. The platelets that are rich in growth factors, boost cell function and increase blood flow to the area. This in turn boosts the growth of new cells and increases their sensitivity to stimulation.

When the vaginal area is bathed in growth factors it plays a crucial part in heightening sexual desire, increasing moisture in the vaginal cavity and facilitates the ability to experience orgasms.

The area is numbed to ensure maximum comfort, during the procedure. The platelet rich blood is injected into the clitoris and upper part of the vagina. The effects of the O-Shot should typically last for a year or more. Multiple O-Shots can be administered to increase the longevity of the effects.

One of the primary reasons women go for an O Shot is to increase the probability of achieving vaginal orgasms and increase the intensity of clitorally stimulated orgasms.

Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation: Since the vaginal walls are made up of collagen fibres, over time, these can stretch and loosen the elasticity of the vaginal cavity. This can be caused to due to ageing or childbirth, leading to a reduction in enjoying sexual intercourse.

How this works: The laser is used to stimulate collagen growth, which in turn tightens the vaginal wall, while restoring a youthful feel. The laser acts on the vaginal wall through a special scanner. Tissue and collagen growth is stimulated. There are visible results in the form of vaginal skin becoming more toned and elastic. In addition to enjoying sexual intercourse, these laser treatments also help in reducing urinary incontinence, lubricating the cavity and reducing the recurrence of vaginal infections.

This laser treatment is non-invasive and is a pain-free procedure. You will notice immediate results once you undergo this procedure. Each session takes around 30 minutes and the effects of this treatment lasts anywhere between 18 months to 2 years. Sexual intercourse can be entered into typically after 5 days from when the procedure has been performed.

Vaginal brightening/lightening procedures: Also referred as vaginal bleaching, such a procedure works to lighten darkened skin around the genital area – which can include the thighs, vulva and sometimes even the anal area. Skin lightning is mainly done for aesthetic purposes. It is not uncommon for the genital area to darken with age, and women with darker skin tones are more prone to this.

How this works: Vaginal bleaching can be done via several methods. Most common is the Q-switched laser which works on the dermis to disperse the melanocytes or pigmentation deposits. Other options include the use of specialised peels, micro needling techniques such as Dermaroller and Dermapen and Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy—all of which can improve skin texture and lighten the skin tone.

These skin bleaching procedures only provide temporary lightening. For prolonged results, these procedures must be done consistently.

A combination of treatments can often lead to lasting results

As mentioned earlier, intimate health issues differ from woman to woman. Some women can experience multiple issues that prevent them from enjoying good intimate health and engaging in and enjoying sexual intercourse. Most times, a combination of treatments is recommended to ensure all issues are combated.

While the O-Shot helps in increasing the chances of achieving an orgasm, the laser vaginal rejuvenation can help in improving the elasticity and lubrication of the vaginal cavity.

Your intimate health is a key part of your well-being. Pay attention to your bodily changes and do not ignore any signs or symptoms. If you suffer from any of the issues discussed here, there are many procedures and treatments that will correct them. Reclaim your intimate health and schedule an appointment with your doctor at the earliest.
